The Conjuring 2 (2016)
“The Conjuring 2,” directed by James Wan, is a supernatural horror film based on the real-life investigations of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. Set in 1977, the film follows the Warrens as they travel to Enfield, a borough in north London, to assist the Hodgson family, who are experiencing terrifying paranormal events in their home.
The story begins with the Warrens dealing with the aftermath of their previous case, the Amityville haunting. Lorraine, who is clairvoyant, has a disturbing vision of a demonic nun, which deeply unsettles her. Despite her fears, they agree to investigate the Enfield case at the request of the church.
In Enfield, the Hodgson family, particularly the young daughter Janet, are tormented by a malevolent spirit. Janet exhibits signs of possession, including levitation, speaking in a deep, unnatural voice, and experiencing violent poltergeist activity. As the Warrens delve deeper into the haunting, they uncover the spirit of Bill Wilkins, a former resident of the house who died there and appears to be the source of the disturbances.
However, Lorraine’s visions of the demonic nun, who she identifies as Valak, reveal a more sinister force at play. Valak is manipulating the spirit of Bill Wilkins to terrorize the Hodgson family and drive them to despair. The Warrens must confront their fears and use their faith and skills to battle this powerful demon.
The film’s climax sees Ed and Lorraine facing Valak head-on to save Janet and her family. Lorraine uses the demon’s true name, Valak, to weaken it and ultimately banish it back to hell. The Hodgson family is finally freed from the haunting, and peace is restored.
“The Conjuring 2” combines chilling scares with a compelling story of faith and determination. It highlights the Warrens’ dedication to helping those in need, even at great personal risk, and continues to build on the eerie, atmospheric horror that defines the series.
