Tides (2021)

“Tides,” also known as “The Colony,” is a science fiction film directed by Tim Fehlbaum. Set in a dystopian future where Earth has been rendered uninhabitable due to environmental destruction and pandemics, the story follows astronaut Blake (Nora Arnezeder) who returns to Earth from the human colony Kepler-209. The mission’s goal is to determine whether Earth is once again capable of sustaining human life.

Blake’s spacecraft crash-lands, and she is separated from her team. Alone in the desolate wasteland, she encounters a group of survivors who have managed to endure the harsh conditions. These survivors are led by a woman named Narvik (Sarah-Sofie Boussnina), who is initially distrustful of Blake. As Blake navigates this dangerous new world, she learns that these inhabitants are struggling to survive against the constant threat of infertility, which is a side effect of the harsh environment.

Blake must overcome her own prejudices and fears while convincing the survivors that their only hope for a future lies in cooperating with her mission. The story delves into themes of survival, trust, and the resilience of the human spirit. It examines the consequences of environmental neglect and the importance of restoring balance to nature.

As Blake uncovers hidden truths about her mission and the survivors’ plight, she faces difficult choices that will determine the fate of both the Kepler-209 colonists and the remaining inhabitants of Earth. The film’s climax brings a sense of hope and possibility, suggesting that humanity can learn from its past mistakes and forge a new path forward.

“Tides” is a thought-provoking exploration of a future where humanity must confront the consequences of its actions and find a way to rebuild and restore the planet. Its stark visuals and compelling narrative highlight the enduring connection between humanity and the Earth.
