Chaos Walking (2021)

“Chaos Walking,” directed by Doug Liman, is a science fiction film set in a dystopian future on a distant planet called New World. The story revolves around Todd Hewitt, a young man living in Prentisstown, a settlement where all the women have disappeared, and the remaining men are afflicted by “the Noise” — a condition that makes their thoughts audible to everyone.

Todd discovers a mysterious girl named Viola, who has crash-landed on the planet. Viola is the first woman Todd has ever seen, and her silence (lack of Noise) is a stark contrast to the overwhelming cacophony he is used to. He soon learns that Viola is in grave danger from the town’s authoritarian mayor, David Prentiss, who sees her as a threat to his power.

As Todd and Viola flee through the treacherous landscape, they form a tenuous bond. Todd, who has grown up believing that the Noise is a divine punishment, starts to question everything he has been taught. Viola reveals that she is part of a scouting mission from a spaceship, sent to prepare for more colonists from Earth, and that her ship contains advanced technology and weaponry that Prentiss covets.

Throughout their journey, Todd and Viola face numerous challenges, including hostile terrain, violent pursuers, and Todd’s struggle to control his Noise. As they uncover the truth about Prentisstown’s dark secrets, they realize the extent of the lies they’ve been fed.

The film explores themes of control, communication, and the nature of truth in a world where privacy is impossible, and thoughts are laid bare. “Chaos Walking” combines action, adventure, and emotional depth, portraying the struggle for survival and the search for freedom in an oppressive society. Todd and Viola’s journey is one of growth and discovery, as they fight not only to survive but to bring hope and change to a fractured world.
